To paraphrase McDonald's: Thousands and thousands served. Actually, to date, TAKE CARE!! has given out almost 200,000 condoms and 100,000 lubricant sachets. In 2005, recognizing that there was a health crisis in Thailand, particularly in Pattaya, regarding the transmission of HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and encouraged by Dr. Philippe Seur of Heartt 2000, a group of volunteer expats and Thais formed TAKE CARE!! It was believed that the promotion of safer sex practices (i.e. the use of condoms and lubricant whenever there was a possible exchange of bodily fluids) was vital to prevention efforts. It was decided that the concentration of TAKE CARE!!'s limited resources would be on business owners, managers, service workers and customers, as well as family members, in the over one hundred gay businesses in the Pattaya/Jomtien area. Venues to be served would include go-go bars, beer bars, massage parlors, hotels and guesthouses and karaoke bars.
TAKE CARE!! is also dedicated to HIV/AIDS education and has been invited to speak to staff at some venues which have regular staff meetings; and has participated in university workshops. There is obviously a need for the kinds of services TAKE CARE!! is providing and with help from the community, TAKE CARE!! will be able to continue its efforts and expand its services to Pattaya's gay community. There are virtually no administrative costs, as all money goes toward the purchase of supplies and instructional material. All labor, such as assembling and distributing safer sex packs is done by volunteers.
